Elphinstone Reef

The Red Sea's most famous wall — oceanic whitetips in the blue

A 300-metre cigar of reef rising from deep water: sheer walls draped in soft coral, drift dives along the flanks, and the plateaus where oceanic whitetip sharks patrol in autumn and hammerheads cruise summer mornings. It is exposed, current-swept, deep and glorious — a dive that earns its legend and demands respect. Advanced certification and real logged experience required; this is not, and never will be, a snorkeling trip.

Oct–Dec for oceanic whitetips; early summer mornings for hammerheads

Insider tip

Take the dawn zodiac departure — you'll hang at the north plateau in the shark hour before day boats arrive, and the wall in morning light is the whole Red Sea in one dive.

Daedalus Reef (Abu Kizan)

The lighthouse in the middle of the sea — hammerhead headquarters

A lone reef with a Victorian lighthouse 80+ km offshore, ringed by walls that drop forever. Schooling hammerheads on the north point, grey reef sharks, and coral untouched by shore traffic. Reached by long speedboat days in season or — better — as the centrepiece of a southern liveaboard itinerary.

Summer for hammerhead schools; liveaboard season year-round

Long-day trips run seasonally; liveaboard itineraries include it — we quote both by date. Marine-park fee applies.

Insider tip

If Daedalus is your goal, book the liveaboard version — two days on the reef beats one exhausted day trip, and dawn dives are when the hammers stack.

Fury Shoals Dive Safari

A labyrinth of caves, swim-throughs and untouched gardens

The south's great playground: a sprawling reef system whose sites read like a greatest-hits list — Sha'ab Claudio's cathedral swim-throughs, Abu Galawa's coral-clad tug wreck, dolphin lagoons and hard-coral gardens in improbable health. Multi-site dive days for certified divers; conditions friendlier than Elphinstone but the distances are real.

Year-round; spring and autumn hit the visibility sweet spot
