Sheltered house reefs, Hurghada

PADI Discover Scuba Diving

Your first breath underwater — no course, no commitment

One theory briefing, one shallow guided dive, maximum four people per instructor. Hurghada's sheltered house reefs are among the world's easiest places to try diving: warm water, no surge, and coral from three metres down. Most people surface already planning their Open Water course.

Best time

Year-round — water never drops below ~21°C

Entry & fees

Per-person intro package: briefing, full kit, one guided dive. Live price below.

Insider tip

Book the morning slot — you'll be relaxed enough to actually look at fish instead of your gauge, and afternoons can get surgy.

PADI Open Water Course

The 3–4 day licence that unlocks the rest of the Red Sea

Theory, confined-water skills and four open-water dives over three to four days — finishing with a real reef certification dive rather than a quarry. Hurghada is one of the cheapest and most forgiving places on earth to get certified, which is why half the dive pros you'll ever meet started here.

Best time

Any season; book early for December–January holidays

Entry & fees

Course package incl. materials, kit and certification fees — live price below.

Insider tip

Do the e-learning theory at home before you fly — it converts a classroom day into an extra dive day.

Abu Nuhas — the Ships' Graveyard

Four wrecks on one reef — the Red Sea's wreck buffet

A reef so perfectly placed in the shipping lane that four cargo wrecks lie along its north face: the Giannis D, Carnatic, Chrisoula K and Kimon M. Two-dive days pair the photogenic tilted stern of the Giannis D with the 1869 Carnatic's coral-clad ribs. Certified divers only; the wrecks sit at friendly 15–27 m.

Best time

Autumn for visibility; summer for the calmest crossing

Entry & fees

Two-dive boat day incl. tanks, weights and guide — live price below.

Insider tip

Ask the guide for the Carnatic second — its wine-bottle cargo hold catches the late-morning light shafts that made it famous.

Strait of Gubal (long day from Hurghada)

SS Thistlegorm Day Trip

The most famous wreck dive on the planet — trucks, motorbikes and history at 30 m

A WWII British supply ship bombed in 1941 with its cargo intact: BSA motorbikes still racked in trucks, Bren carriers, wellington boots, locomotives thrown clear of the deck. It's a long day (pre-dawn start, 3+ hours steaming each way) and a serious dive with current — and every certified diver should do it once.

Best time

May–September for the calmest Gubal crossings

Entry & fees

Two-dive day trip incl. guide, tanks, lunch — live price below.

Insider tip

Dive one goes to the holds while the site is quiet; save wide shots of the bow gun for dive two when the day-boat crowd thins.

Guided Night Dive

Same reef, different planet after dark

Spanish dancers, hunting lionfish, sleeping parrotfish in mucus cocoons and coral polyps open to feed — the night shift is a different ecosystem. One torch-lit guided dive on a site you'll barely recognise from daylight. Certified divers only, small groups, torches provided.

Best time

New-moon weeks for bioluminescence on the safety stop

Entry & fees

Single guided dive incl. torch and kit — live price below.

Insider tip

Cover your torch against your chest for thirty seconds mid-dive and wave your hand — the bioluminescent plankton sparkle is the best 'free extra' in Hurghada.
